How Is Shoe Size Calculated?

Ayakkabı Numarası Nasıl Hesaplanır?

A good shoe should make you feel good not only through its appearance but also through its comfort. Of course, the primary rule for comfortable shoes is choosing the right shoe size. Shoe sizes follow certain standard measurements. These measurements may vary somewhat depending on the country or shoe brand. However, they are fundamentally calculated based on a foot's length and width in centimeters. Sizes for women's, men's, children's, and babies' shoes are limited to specific ranges.

Shoe sizes used in Turkey correspond to the same measurements used in Europe. The numbers corresponding to a given size in centimeters represent the shoe size and may vary according to the unit of measurement used in each country. Shoes purchased in Turkey are calculated using a shoe measurement method called the Paris Point system. Although the same system is used in many countries, shoe sizes are represented by different numbers. Due to the anatomical differences between men, women, and children, measurements taken in centimeters are converted into shoe sizes using different lasts.

How to Measure Your Feet and Determine Your Shoe Size

To measure your foot, first measure its length in centimeters. Certain methods are used to ensure an accurate measurement, precisely determining the foot's width and length. Since each person's toe, metatarsal, and heel width may differ anatomically, the most accurate measurement is always obtained when the process is carried out carefully. The measurements obtained in centimeters are then matched with the corresponding number on the shoe size chart.

You can follow these steps in order to measure your feet:

  • Tape a blank A4 sheet of paper flat to the floor at its corners.
  • Place the foot vertically and centered on the paper.
  • Draw a line from the longest toe, usually the big toe, to the end point of the heel.
  • Measure the distance between the lines drawn on the paper with a ruler.
  • Compare the foot length measured in centimeters with the size chart used by the shoe brand.

If your feet are wider than normal and you want to learn the width of your metatarsal bones, you can do the following:

  • Place the foot on an A4 sheet of paper secured to the floor.
  • Draw lines from the widest points of the metatarsal bones.
  • Measure the distance between the drawn lines with a ruler to determine the foot width.
  • People with wide metatarsal bones may feel more comfortable by choosing shoes half a size larger.

Here is another method you can also use to calculate children’s shoe sizes:

  • One foot is placed on a white sheet of paper fixed to the floor while standing upright.
  • The circumference of the foot is carefully traced with a pencil.
  • The distance between the heel and the longest toe (length), and between the big toe bone and the little toe bone (width), are measured with a ruler.
  • The same process is repeated for the other foot because one of a person’s feet may be larger than the other.
  • The shoe size is selected based on the foot with the greater length and width.

What Are the Differences Between Shoe Sizes in Different Countries?

Countries use different shoe sizes according to their own measurement units. With a little research, you can quickly find the information you need for international size comparisons. Since international measurements vary, it is useful to check which system the product you choose uses.

The Paris measurement system of French origin, used in Türkiye and Europe, is based on foot length. After measuring the foot length for shoes, 1 cm is added to the resulting figure to produce the shoe molds. For this reason, it is also one of the methods that provides the most comfortable results for wide feet. The pont - punt - point system used in Türkiye and Europe is found in many brands. This measurement system does not include half sizes, only full sizes. For example, if size 36 shoes are too tight, size 37, one size larger, is selected. In the pont system, 3 sizes change over 2 centimeters, and each pont is calculated as 0.6 cm. The French measurement system appears on shoe labels as TR and EU (Europe).

United States shoe sizes are indicated by “US” on the label. Women’s sizes generally start at 5. Two different systems are used in the United States: Standard and International. The two numbering systems differ by half a size. Similar to the UK shoe measurement system, the US international measurement system includes half sizes, with a half-size change every 4.233 millimeters. In the standard measurement system, the formula +1 is applied between women’s and men’s sizes.

The same measurement system is used in countries such as the United Kingdom, Pakistan, South Africa, and Ireland, which use the UK sizing system. It is an improved version of the old English Barleycorn system. Shoe sizes increase or decrease based on 8.47 mm, or 1/3 inch. Although women’s and men’s sizes generally use the same numbering system, this may vary by brand.

The shoe measurement systems used in other countries are as follows:

  • Although Canada uses standard sizes similar to the US system, children’s, women’s, and men’s sizes are generally calculated without adding +1.
  • In Japan, Taiwan, and China, foot length and circumference are calculated and expressed in centimeters. Foot widths are indicated by different letters, such as A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.
  • Countries in Europe, such as Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and Italy, use the French Paris Point system.

How Is Children’s Shoe Size Determined?

Choosing shoes can be challenging because children continue to grow. You can determine your child’s current foot size by using the methods described above for measuring feet for shoe sizes. It is also possible to use the shoe size charts created by brands based on age, height, and weight. However, since every child’s growth pattern is different, the most accurate result comes from measuring the feet. Standard size charts may therefore not always be effective.

If your child’s toes touch the front when they put on the shoe and stand up, it may be time to buy a new pair of shoes. If the front of the shoe is too rigid to press down, you can remove the insole and compare it with the measurement you took to determine whether the size needs to be changed. Although choosing shoes one size larger is common for children, the healthiest option is to buy products based on their current foot measurements.

What Are the Shoe Size Calculation Formulas?

Foot length and width can be calculated using various methods, such as a foot-measuring device, measuring on paper, or measuring from an insole. Although shoe lasts vary by brand and even by model, these measurements generally provide the most accurate results. When shopping in different countries, you can find the right model by using a shoe size converter. You usually only need to enter the measurements in millimeters or centimeters. Nevertheless, the different formulas used to calculate shoe sizes by country are as follows:

  • Paris Point: 3/2 x foot length + 2
  • United States (US) Method: 3 x foot length in inches – 22
  • United Kingdom (UK) Method: 3 x foot length in inches – 23
  • Canadian Method: 3 x foot length in inches - 22

How Is Shoe Size Calculated for Women's, Men's, and Children's Shoes?

The systems used to determine shoe sizes may differ for women, men, and children depending on the country. While some measurement systems do not distinguish between genders, many include this distinction in their calculations due to anatomical differences. For example, in the Paris Point system, which is also used in Türkiye, 29 centimeters corresponds to size 47 for women and size 45 for men. For a foot of the same measurement, the size is 46 in China, 10.5 in Australia, 45 in Europe, and 11.5 in the United States.

What Should You Consider When Determining Your Shoe Size?

If you want to determine your shoe size, you can get more accurate results by paying attention to the following beforehand:

  • Since feet swell in the late afternoon, afternoons are suitable for taking measurements. Measuring with foot swelling taken into account allows you to choose comfortable shoes at all times of the day.
  • Seasons and the model should also be considered when choosing the right shoes. For example, you may want to wear thick socks inside boots and winter shoes during the winter months. Therefore, you can buy one size larger after taking the sock thickness into account.
  • Although a half-size difference may not have much impact on everyday shoes, it can make a significant difference, especially when choosing athletic shoes. The foot's exposure to strenuous movements during exercise can cause problems such as swelling and blisters when there is a half-size difference.
  • Foot measurements should always be taken while standing, and shoes should be tried on while standing upright. This is because the sole widens when a person stands and narrows when sitting, as it does not make full contact with the ground.

What Is a Shoe Size Measurement Unit and How Is It Calculated?

Shoe size units are calculated using different formulas in centimeters or inches. Inch-based calculations are divided into increments according to the country to determine shoe sizes. Different additions and subtractions are applied for women and men to convert them into shoe sizes. Shoe size units are not calculated solely in centimeters; they are converted through calculations into a system in which shoe sizes increase or decrease by small increments.
